Facility Improvements and Annual Maintenance Set to Begin at Ponoka Aquaplex on August 25
Improvements Include Complete Renovation of Changerooms
Annual maintenance and facility improvements at the Ponoka Aquaplex will begin on Monday, August 25. The pool area will be temporarily closed until the work is completed.
Facility improvements and maintenance will include:
- A complete renovation and modernization of the changerooms, which will include new flooring, tiles, fixtures, vanities and freshly painted walls;
- Draining of all pools to install a new water filtration system and replace the current filters that have reached the end of their lifecycle. The water filtration system controls water clarity and chemistry in the pools;
- Scrubbing and deep cleaning of the main pool, deep tank, hot tub, wading pool and sauna;
- Scrubbing and power washing the pool deck; and
- Painting throughout the facility.
“The upgrades and renovations to the changerooms and pool filters are part of the Town’s annual proactive maintenance program at the Aquaplex to continually modernize and refresh the facility and ensure smooth operation throughout the year,” said Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for the Town of Ponoka.
“The Town has made significant upgrades and improvements to the Aquaplex every year for the past several years,” said Jones. “By investing in Town infrastructure – one of the key pillars in Council’s Strategic Plan – we’re able to enhance the user experience and continue offering a welcoming space for everyone.”
Improvements over the past five years have included a complete resurfacing and refinishing of the pool deck, wading pool and hot tub; a new rooftop HVAC that regulates airflow, temperature and humidity; new cedar wall paneling, benches and flooring in the sauna; and renovations to the multi-purpose room for birthday parties and group functions.
Jones noted that late August and September are typically a slow time at the Aquaplex with many people either still away on holidays or busily adjusting to the return of school, which is why the work is scheduled at this time.
While the improvements and maintenance are underway at the Ponoka Aquaplex, recreation passes for the Aquaplex will be honoured at the Manluk Centre in Wetaskiwin (4514 50 Avenue) and the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre in Lacombe (5429 53 Street). Users will be required to present their Aquaplex passes at both facilities.
Regular operations at the Ponoka Aquaplex are expected to resume in early October.
